Blog tips for 175 - to get a good portfolio mark

Gentlemen:

Most of you have functioning blogs for 175 and have been posting your writings every week as is required for your portfolio grade. We will introduce bar chart writing this week - and the blog will be due on Sunday (or Thursday for the CJA's). Mohammed Al Hashemi you need to check your blog and send me the new URL this week, because I can't open your blog yet. This is important, send me the URL this week!

If you don't post your writing in the week we study that form/ style, then you miss the points for that writing for that week (10 points out of 50 for 1/2 your portfolio grade after the first Progress test).

Keep up your writing posts, the portfolio will be easier and you'll get full marks!

Date producing countries in 2001 - Top 10 date-producing countries

The bar graph shows date production in tonnes for the world's top producers in 2001. Ten countries in the Gulf region and North Africa are featured.

First, Egypt was responsible for the lion's share of production, with over a million tonnes, but Iran was a close second, with almost 0.9 million. Following them came the UAE and Saudi Arabia, rivalling each other with about 740,000 tonnes each. Pakistan and Iraq, with outputs of approximately 630,000, were not far behind. The rest of the nations, however, were far less productive. Algeria supplied the world with nearly 400,000 tonnes and Oman around quarter of a million. In contrast, the harvests in Libya and Sudan were far less plentiful, yielding under 0.2 million each.

In summary, date production was most abundant in Egypt and Iran. In contrast, the countries with the smallest output were Libya and Sudan.

The two pie charts show spending on leisure products comparing two age groups, above 50 and below 30 in the UK. As can be expected, overall sales of sporting equipment decreased with age, whereas, spending on gardening and reading materials increased.

The areas of greatest spending among the under 30 group were for books and electronics, with both groups spending approximately 40% of their budgets on electronic equipment. This compares with the over 50 group where books and electronic equipment also had a larger share of the leisure budget comprising over 60% of total expenditures.

Comparatively, both groups spent 16% of their free-time budgets on photography and other hobbies, but differed greatly regarding the money spent on gardening, with the older group spending over twice the amount for gardening items than the under 30 group.

In summary, leisure time expenditures by the two UK age groups showed remarkable similarities, except in the areas of sports, gardening and reading materials which showed the greatest change with age.

Welcome to 175

Gentlemen:

I’m sure you had a good winter break and are ready to start a new term. In N175 we will continue to work on your basic English skills, as in 125, and will add in a speaking element, your personal interview.

We will use your Blogger sites every week to work on and correct your writing. Each week you will have a new writing assignment which you will upload to your Blogsite, as well as do corrections for each assignment. This means at least two posts for every week – which will also be graded as your writing portfolios, after each of the Progress tests. This will account for 10% of your overall grade. You will need to keep up every week, or your Blogs will be incomplete and be graded down.

The Progress test #1 will be in week #8, and will cover three types of graphs, and problem/ solution essays, so we have much to work on before week #8.

I’m sure you will enjoy the next term as much as I will!
